Lessons From The Birds

So, my family is somewhat obsessed with birds (especially my mother). In fact, we have a whole room dedicated to birds in our decorating choices. There’s something about a simple chickadee or sparrow that just is so simple, innocent, and beautiful. Since installing a new, small garden by one of our windows, we’ve had the chance to bird watch more and more.
One day, I even saw a little hummingbird! He came right up to the window and stopped there for a second, just enjoying the moment to his heart’s content before he embarked on his next adventure. I suppose the thing I admire most about birds is how they never worry. They’re not concerned about the weather, what they’ll eat next, or where they’ll sleep that night. They know that God will provide for them. And that is enough.

In the book of Matthew, Jesus says something similar: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:25‭-‬34 ESV

The birds know who provides for them, the flowers are clothed in splendor, the heavens declare God’s glory, so why do we worry and choose to rely on ourselves instead of the God who created the Universe?

Ouch.

That one hurts a little.

So often, I get wound up about this or that, what they’re saying or what they think. But really, it doesn’t matter. I’m not supposed to hold onto that anyway. My job is to surrender and seek FIRST His kingdom. Before I spiral in my thoughts, I seek Him. Before worry and anxiety set in, I seek Him. When everything is going good, I seek Him. When everything is the opposite of going good, I seek Him. He is the One who holds it all so why do I doubt that He’d hold me, too? I’m learning to simply trust and to simply seek, and it’s not easy all the time. But I know that my God will provide for all of my needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus. That’s a lot of riches and He is more than enough.

So, I supposed that’s why we love birds so much; they’re a reminder of God’s grace and overflowing riches. They’re a reminder that we don’t have to worry or be anxious because He sees us and cares for us. I mean, if he holds and cares for that little hummingbird, how much more does He hold and care for us? Therefore, we can have peace even when life is uncertain.
